1897 PCGS MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin 

The Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, serving as the official $20 coin in the United States from 1850 to 1907, was crafted by the US Mint with .9675 oz of gold. It featured the design of James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint. 

During the economic crisis of the 1930s, a significant number of these $20 Liberty Double Eagles vanished as the price of gold increased. These coins were seized, hoarded, and melted down for their gold value.

The Design

The portrait of Lady Liberty imprinted on the obverse consists of a left-profile bust adorned with a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY." It is encircled by thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original Thirteen Colonies and contains the year of mintage engraved at the bottom rim.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle spread its wings, clutching arrows in its talons. It also has the national shield on its chest and the banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on its beak. 

The accompanying inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "TWENTY DOLLARS."
