The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty’s portrayal adorned with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars surrounding her left-profile bust stand for the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is inscribed at the bottom.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle has the national shield stamped on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on a banner above its head.

The engraving “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.” refer to the coin’s issuance and face value. The “O” mint mark completes the design.
