1862 NGC AU-53 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin
By 1862, gold coin production at the Philadelphia Mint had sharply declined. In the midst of the Civil War, this was further impacted by widespread hoarding, exporting, and melting of coins valued above one dollar. Consequently, the 1862 double eagle has an exceptionally low survival rate and is highly sought after date. Among Type One double eagles from this mint, it is the rarest in overall rarity, aside from the extremely rare 1861 Paquet reverse.
