1842-O NGC AU-53 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

From 1838 to 1907, the Liberty Head Eagle served as the official $10 gold circulation coin of the United States, preceding the Indian Head Gold Eagle. 

Struck in 0.4837 Troy oz of gold, these coins held legal tender status and featured a neoclassical design by Christian Gobrecht, the U.S. Mint’s third Chief Engraver. 

Their long mintage and historical role make them a significant piece of America’s gold coinage legacy. And those issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty was depicted wearing a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” It also features thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse portrays the Heraldic Eagle with the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The artistry includes the engraving “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D.”
