1841 NGC AU-55 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin - Granite Lady Hoard
This coin carries the prestigious "Granite Lady Hoard" pedigree, marking it as part of a historic collection that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the devastating fires that followed.
Amid the widespread destruction, one building remained standing: the United States Mint in San Francisco, known as the "Old Granite Lady." Within its resilient walls was a small hoard of older gold coins that survived the catastrophe. Today, these coins are uniquely labeled and certified by NGC as part of the Granite Lady Hoard.
The US Mint produced Liberty Eagle Gold Coins from 1838 to 1907, which contained .4837 oz of gold for widespread circulation as an official $10 coin.
In addition to an attractive amount of gold, $10 Liberty Eagle gold coins displayed a patriotic design illustrated by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
These coins, in particular, are sealed with NGC Special Granite Lady Hoard Label in honor of the second building raised in 1874 to expand the San Francisco Mint’s facilities during the California Gold Rush and accommodate the increasing demand for gold refining. The building got the “Granite Lady” moniker for its massive two-story structure built out of granite to handle the heavy minting equipment.
