1987 1 oz Chinese Panda Gold Coin
The Chinese Mint has been producing the Panda Series since 1982. The series trademark is giving the Panda an original depiction at each strike, giving its collection a variety.
That turned Gold Panda Coins into one of the most sought-after gold coins worldwide and a successful coin program.
The 1987 edition differs from others because it was a low strike of approximately 47,000 and the only one featuring a “y” mintmark.
It may be a rare collectible.

The 1987 Design
Panda is the standard motif of the series. However, it gets a unique design at each strike.
The 1987 reverse design showcases a calm Panda drinking water from a river with some bamboo trees in the background.
There are Chinese inscriptions on the left, accompanied by “.999 1 oz Au,” referring to the fineness, weight, and metal content. The coin’s face value is at the bottom, and a small “y” on the right represents the mintmark.
The obverse features the Temple of Heaven in Beijing with the Chinese inscription corresponding to “The People’s Republic of China” arching over the image and “1987”, for the year of mintage, on the bottom.
