The Design

Gold Buffalo Coins are named after their reverse design. The giant American Bison depicted in an upstanding position resembles a Buffalo, hence the moniker. 

The inscriptions that accompany the buffalo read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which lies near the Buffalo’s muzzle. 

The coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content description read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”

The obverse features a Native American Chief’s right profile, which resembles the Indian Head Nickel coin created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. 

The profile unites traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the front of the Native’s forehead. The year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.

An MS-70 Coin

Third-party grading services, like the PCGS - Professional Coin Grading System, use the Sheldon Grading Scale to appraise and certify coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition. 

MS refers to a Mint State coin, which means the coin has the same format as a widespread circulation sample, which has never been in circulation. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
