PCGS AU-50 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin Type II - Random Year
The official dollar coin that circulated in American hands from 1849 to 1854 was the Liberty Head Gold Coin. The US Mint would craft them containing .0483 Troy oz of gold, legal tender status and James B. Longacre’s design.
The $1 Liberty Coin experienced three design revamps. Type II, also known as the Indian Princess design, was an intricate image that presented errors and needed replacement.
Today, SD Bullion has $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins of Type II of varied mintage in stock. These coins are randomly taken from our inventory depending on availability, sealed, and certified by PCGS as AU-50 coins.

The Design
On the obverse, Lady Liberty is wearing a fanciful feathered headdress inscribed “LIBERTY.” It is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum then.
Around her bust read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The reverse features the coin’s monetary denomination and year of mintage surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
A PCGS AU-50 coin
PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service is a third-party service that appraises and grades coins independently of sovereign mints, using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
AU-50 stands for Almost or About Uncirculated and describes a coin with slight wear on more than 50% of the design image and minor softness on high elements.
