NGC SP-70 First Releases 2016-W 1/10 oz Gold Mercury Dime Centennial Coin
The US Mint celebrated the centenary of three remarkable coin designs in 2016 by issuing commemorative strikes of gold bullion coins for each: the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar, and the Mercury Dime.
The Mercury Dime was the first coin from this three-set released by the US Mint in 2016. It weighs 1/10 oz of 24k gold and was issued by the West Point branch, reproducing the original Mercury Dime designed by Adolph A. Weinman.
Today, you can acquire 2016-W 1/10 oz Walking Liberty Gold Half-Dollar Coins, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as perfect SP-70 samples from SD Bullion.

The Design
The obverse showcases the Winged Liberty Head designed by Adolph A. Weinman to stamp the Mercury Dime, the US 10-cent coin that circulated from 1916 to 1945. The image consists of Liberty's left profile, wearing a winged pileus cap. The winged cap represents the freedom of thought, but it resembles Mercury, the messenger Roman god.
The inscriptions on this side are “LIBERTY,” arching over the image, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the lower left, the year of issuance at the bottom, and the “W” West Point mint mark on the right.
The reverse design features Roman fasces, rods bound together around an axe, wrapped in olive branches, symbolizing power and authority. The engravings surrounding the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DIME.” They are supplemented by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “AU 24K 1/10 OZ,” referring to the coin’s metal content, purity, and weight.
An NGC SP-70 First Releases coin
NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company is a third-party service that works independently from sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins based on their condition and the Sheldon Grading Scale.
According to the scale, SP stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is superior to a standard circulation coin. The grade 70 is attributed to perfect coins, which show no signs of flaws.
“First Release” refers to coins purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their public availability.
