The U.S. Mint struck the Liberty Quarter Eagle coins from 1840 to 1907 for use as official $2.50 currency, each containing 0.12094 ounces of gold.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this iconic illustration remained unchanged for an impressive 67 years—the longest-running design in the history of American coinage.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The Thirteen Original Colonies are represented by stars, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, the national shield on its chest, arrows, and an olive branch on its talons.

It also contains inscriptions describing the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.

PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service and NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are independent services that appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

For both services, MS stands for mint state. It refers to a coin struck in the same format as a business circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 66 indicates that the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but it is above average in terms of strike quality and retains its original mint luster.
