1849-O NGC MS-61 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin – Type I

The U.S. Mint produced the $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin from 1849 to 1854 as the nation’s first circulating gold dollar. Struck with 0.0483 troy ounces of gold and designed by James B. Longacre, these early gold dollars played a significant role in expanding America’s gold coinage during the California Gold Rush era.

Coins minted in New Orleans carry the characteristic “O” mint mark, and Type I Liberty Heads—especially those in higher Mint State grades—are increasingly scarce due to their age, small size, and limited survival rates.

SD Bullion offers 1849-O NGC MS-61 $1 Liberty Head Type I Gold Coins, each certified and encapsulated by NGC.

Coin Highlights

  • Graded and encapsulated by NGC as MS-61

  • Contains .0483 troy oz of gold

  • Struck by the U.S. Mint

  • Issued by the New Orleans Mint featuring the “O” mint mark

  • Pre-1933 U.S. gold coin

  • Smallest gold dollar denomination ever produced

  • Designed by James B. Longacre

The Design

Obverse:
Features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies.

Reverse:
Displays the denomination “1 DOLLAR” and the year of issue, framed by a decorative wreath and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

An NGC MS-61 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) grades coins according to the 70-point Sheldon Scale.
An MS (Mint State) coin mirrors the format of regular circulation strikes, while a grade of MS-61 indicates diminished luster, visible contact marks, and noticeable hairlines—yet still a desirable uncirculated example for a coin of this age and rarity.
