NGC MS-69 Early Release 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin
The US Mint introduced the Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles in 1986 through the American Eagle Program, a result of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985.
The American Gold Eagles are the official gold bullion coins in the US. They are 22-karat but contain a full troy ounce of gold. Due to the extra alloy of 3% silver and 5.33% copper, the 1 oz American Gold Eagles are slightly larger than other gold coins, like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
Today, you can find 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins sealed in NGC slabs and certified as Early Release MS-69 samples at SD Bullion.
Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 Troy oz of actual gold content;
- Evaluated, graded, and encapsulated by the NGC as an MS-69 coin;
- Struck in the first 30 days of the US Mint’s release;
- Holds a face value of USD 50 and legal tender status;
- With reeded edges;
- The obverse showcases the 1907 Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty;
- The reverse features the original Bald Eagle design.
The Design
The Lady Liberty image portrayed in the obverse of American Gold Eagles reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin.
Saint-Gaudens depicts Lady Liberty marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. Her walk symbolizes the nation’s evolution to progress and enlightenment.
The image also contains an imprint of the Capitol Building on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” inscribed on top, and the year of mintage on the right, in Roman letters. Six-pointed stars encircle the image.
The reverse side displays a female Bald Eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest.
The engravings on this side are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s weight, metal content, and denomination, “1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS.”
An NGC MS-69 Early Release Coin
NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, and it is a third-party service that works independently of sovereign mints to appraise coins and grade them based on the Sheldon Grading Scale.
The scale provides coins with a specific status based on their condition, from 70 to 1.
The NGC names Early Release the coins manufactured in the first 30 days of production in the US Mint. MS stands for Mint State, referring to a coin made in the same format as a business circulation sample, which has never been in circulation. And the grade 69 refers to a coin whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
