The coin’s design became a landmark in the US. It was created by Christian Gobrecht and featured two emblematic symbols: Lady Liberty with a tiara engraved with the word “LIBERTY” and the Heraldic Eagle, grasping arrows and olive branches.
The design remained unchanged for 67 years, making it the longest-untouched coin design in the history of American coinage.

The Design
In Gobrecht’s design, Lady Liberty’s portrait is a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The stars encircling her face represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom.
The Heraldic Eagle showcased on the reverse has outstretched wings, the national shield on its chest, arrows, and an olive branch in its talons. The duality between the arrows and the olive branch symbolizes America’s military readiness but also its desire for peace.
The inscriptions on this side are limited to the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.
An NGC MS-63 Coin
The NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized third-party service that appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.
MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in the format of a widespread circulation coin. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines, detracting scuff marks or defects throughout the design. But still attractive overall appearance.
