The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress inscribed “LIBERTY.” It is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at the time.

Additional engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the bust. 

The reverse features the coin’s denomination and year of issuance surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
