Goldback notes are voluntary local currencies that may be accepted as payment in specific US states. Though they lack Federal legal tender, vendors may accept them based on their perceived value.

The first Goldback was released in 2019 in Utah. Since then, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and recently South Dakota have imprinted their 5-set Goldback Notes.

This piece is the 50 South Dakota Goldback, which contains 0.05 Troy Oz of 24k gold and an alluring design that presents South Dakota’s most emblematic symbols.

The Design

The Note showcases design elements on the obverse side. The reverse side only mirrors what is imprinted on the obverse.

It is standard for all Golback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue. 

The South Dakota 50 Goldback Note portrays the virtue Liberta, the feminine personification of Liberty, marching into combat wielding a sword and a shield. 

Mount Rushmore and the Capitol Building of South Dakota are on her back. The “50” denomination lies on the top left, beside the note’s origin. On the bottom is the description of gold content.

A Goldback is a regional currency accepted as a form of payment in restricted locations within the United States.

Goldback notes hold no dollar legal tender. However, as they are made from .999 pure gold paint applied to a plastic film, they are valued as a bullion item. 

Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, their sizes range from 1/1000th oz to 1/20th oz, as well as their denominations, which can vary from 1 to 50, proportionally to their amounts of gold.

The year of mintage may vary based on currently available supply.
