The Design
As with all Goldback Notes, the obverse features an allegorical female figure representing a classical virtue. The Oklahoma 10 Goldback depicts Unitas, or Unity, portrayed through a vivid intertribal powwow scene—paying tribute to the state’s unique distinction of housing more Native American nations than any other U.S. state.
The central figure is a woman performing the Fancy Shawl Dance, her motion capturing the elegance of a hummingbird or butterfly. She is accompanied by a male dancer executing the men’s Fancy Dance, based on real-life champion dancer Mike Pahsetopah of the Osage Nation. His daughter, Heaven, a renowned Fancy Shawl dancer and performer, also features in the design.
A raven, regarded in many Native cultures as a keeper of sacred knowledge, carries a ribbon bearing the word “Unitas.” Surrounding the dancers are symbolic elements such as a Ruby-throated Hummingbird for renewal, a buffalo to signify survival, Black Swallowtail butterflies, and blooming Indian blanket flowers, Oklahoma’s state wildflower.
Each symbol works together to reflect Oklahoma’s deep Indigenous roots, the importance of unity among nations, and the sacred relationship between people, land, and tradition.
Goldback Notes
Goldbacks are a form of voluntary local currency, accepted as payment in participating communities across select states including Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, and now Oklahoma.
They are not U.S. legal tender but are valued for their gold content—each note containing actual 24k gold layered between durable polymer film. Denominations range from 1/2 to 100 Goldbacks, each scaled to the gold weight they contain.
The year of mintage may vary depending on available inventory.
