The Design

Goldback Notes designs showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue. 

The Arizona 50 Goldback celebrates the 1930 discovery of Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The artwork embodies “Curiositas”, or “Curiosity”, depicting a young woman gazing skyward in wonder, holding a book embossed with Pluto’s symbol and a telescope, with the observatory dome behind her. 

A vintage newspaper clipping recalls Pluto’s announcement as the ninth planet, while Pluto and its moon Charon appear above, symbolizing the unexpected revelations of discovery.

This design honors the spirit of exploration and awe, highlighting humanity’s quest for knowledge and the enduring principle: “Be still and trust God.”

The “50” denomination is inscribed near “ARIZONA GOLDBACKS,” with the gold weight and content noted at the bottom.

The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring them.

A Goldback, also known as a foil note, is a voluntary regional currency used for trade and payment in select areas of the United States. These beautifully crafted notes are currently issued in Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona.
