The Design
It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue.
This artwork honors the virtue of “Virtus”, or “Valor”, by celebrating the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry Regiment. Formed after the Civil War, the regiment was composed of African American soldiers who distinguished themselves in service while confronting racial prejudice at home. The piece captures their enduring spirit of resilience, showing a central figure in full uniform and saddle gear, proudly carrying the flag with unwavering determination.
Strong and dignified, the figure embodies the Roman ideal of Virtus: courage in the face of trial, excellence in duty, and honor. The Buffalo Soldiers’ legacy serves as a reminder of the enduring principle: “Let hardship forge you—not harden you.”
The “10” denomination is inscribed near “ARIZONA GOLDBACKS,” with the gold weight and content noted at the bottom.
The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback, also known as a foil note, is a voluntary regional currency used for trade and payment in select areas of the United States. These beautifully crafted notes are currently issued in Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona.
While not considered legal tender, Goldbacks hold intrinsic value as bullion, thanks to the layer of 24-karat gold carefully embedded within a durable polymer film.
Resembling traditional paper money in shape, each note’s denomination, ranging from 1/2 to 100, corresponds directly to the precise amount of gold it contains, from 1/1000th troy ounce up to 1/10th troy ounce.
