The term "wreath" derives from the Old English word "writhan," meaning "to twist," and wreaths have been associated with a number of cultures over the generations. Wreaths are thought to date back to the Persian Empire, ancient Egypt, and ancient Greece, but their function during those periods is different from the way they are commonly used today. Wreaths called diadems were a symbol of influence or legitimacy worn as headdresses in the Persian Empire. They were made of textiles, embellished with jewels, and mostly worn by royalty. A type of wreath was often worn by ancient Egyptians as a headdress, but theirs was made of flowers and called a chaplet. The obverse of the copper round features a wreath with holly and ornaments intertwined with the classic pine branches.
