The US Mint first released the American Liberty Silver Medal in 2015, with a contemporary artistry that honors the evolving concepts of freedom and limited edition.

The Design

The obverse presents a radiant sunflower, long a symbol of democracy and renewal, representing Liberty in a modern light, designed by Christopher Polentz. 

The word “LIBERTY” arches over the image, while the year of issuance is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse showcases a dynamic American bald eagle mid-flight, rendered with sweeping lines that convey strength, grace, and motion. 

This imagery was sculpted by Eric Custer, exclusively for the 2025 release, and appears in high relief for dramatic visual depth.

It also displays the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the Philadelphia branch “P” mint mark.

A PCGS PR-70 “First Day of Issue” Medal

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins and medals using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to PCGS, a “First Day of Issue” medal is a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.

“PR” stands for “Proof”, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a medal with no visible flaws.
