2025 NGC PL-70 Early Releases 1 oz Charlemagne Gold Coin - Commander Series
Scottsdale Mint introduces the newest release in its striking Commander Series, a premium collection of silver and gold coins honoring some of the most influential leaders in world history.
Past editions have featured iconic figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, General Patton, Hernán Cortés, Emperor Julius Caesar, and Ulysses S. Grant. The latest addition to this historic lineup introduces Charlemagne.
Charlemagne, “Charles the Great” in French, was one of the most influential rulers in European history and the founder of what became the Holy Roman Empire. As King of the Franks and later Emperor, he united much of Western and Central Europe under his reign, laying the foundation for what would become the modern European states we know today. His greatest achievements as a ruler included the promotion of learning and culture during what is known as the Carolingian Renaissance, as well as reforms in administration, law, and the church that helped stabilize and strengthen his empire. His reign from 768-814 AD revived centralized authority in Western Europe at a time when it had fragmented after the fall of Rome hundreds of years before.
As a military commander, Charlemagne proved himself both bold and strategic. He led successful campaigns against the Saxons, Lombards, Avars, and other groups, steadily expanding his empire and securing its borders. One of his most notable campaigns was the Siege of Pavia in 773–774, where Charlemagne crossed the alps to decisively defeat the Lombard Kingdom in Northern Italy at the Pope’s request. The siege lasted through the harsh winter but Charlemagne stood firm, starving the city into submission. Charlemagne proved his fairness by sparing the city from destruction and exiling the former king. This victory ended Lombard rule and allowed Charlemagne to claim the title of King of the Lombards, further solidifying his power in Europe. His combination of military skill and vision as a statesman earned him recognition as the "Father of Europe" and a central figure in shaping the medieval world.
