2025 NGC PL-70 Early Releases 1/10 oz Grant Gold Coin - Commander Series

Scottsdale Mint unveils the latest edition of its esteemed Commander Series, a collection of silver and gold coins of varied sizes honoring legendary leaders who shaped history worldwide.

Previous editions showcased Napoleon Bonaparte, General Patton, Hernán Cortés, and Emperor Julius Caesar. Now, the series proudly welcomes its newest addition for the fifth release: Ulysses S. Grant.

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States and Commanding General of the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Born in Ohio in 1822, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1843 and served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He resigned in 1854 before rejoining the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861.

During the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant emerged as one of the Union’s most effective and decisive generals. He first gained national recognition with early victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in 1862, earning him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. His leadership at the Battle of Shiloh demonstrated his resilience despite heavy casualties, and his successful siege of Vicksburg in 1863 was a turning point in the war, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Grant as the commander of all Union armies, where he implemented a relentless strategy of total warfare, engaging Confederate forces in continuous battles that depleted their resources. His Overland Campaign, though costly, forced General Robert E. Lee into a war of attrition, ultimately leading to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Grant’s aggressive and strategic approach helped bring about the Union’s victory and cemented his reputation as a brilliant military leader.

Following the war, Grant’s popularity propelled him to the presidency in 1868. As president, he focused on Reconstruction and worked to modernize the economy and improve infrastructure. His presidency marked a crucial period in American history, as he sought to navigate the complexities of post-war reconstruction and political turmoil. After leaving office in 1877, he traveled the world and later wrote his memoirs, which became a literary and financial success. He died in 1885, leaving behind a legacy as a determined military leader and a president who sought unity in a divided nation.

These coins, in particular, are samples of smaller sizes. They contain 1/10 troy oz of 99.99% pure gold. They were purchased from the Scottsdale Mint within 30 days of their official release and submitted to NGC for grading.

Today, SD Bullion proudly offers the 2025 1/10 oz Grant Gold Coin, which has been sealed and certified by NGC as a PL-70 Early Releases.

An NGC PL-70 “Early Releases” coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints, grading coins from 1 to 70, using the Sheldon Scale according to their condition.

According to NGC, “Early Releases” refers to coins submitted from their original mints within 30 days of their official release.

The term PL, or Prooflike, describes the numeric grade of a coin with mirrored fields that resemble Proof. 70 is the highest grade on the scale, given to flawless coins.
