2025 1 oz 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Pillar Dollar Silver Coin

The Perth Mint produced the 2025 1 oz Proclamation Pillar Dollar Silver Coin to celebrate the 225th Anniversary of the Proclamation of 1800, a landmark event for the Australian economy.

This act fixed the values of eleven different types of foreign coins that circulated in colonial Australia, offering economic stability and a more structured system for trade.

The coin's design pays homage to the famous Spanish Pillar Dollar, a very important coin for not only Australian colonial commerce, but even moreso the American colonies and the ecomoney of a young United States. The Spanish Pillar Dollar, also known as the "Piece of Eight" or Real de a Ocho, was a silver coin minted by the Spanish Empire from the late 16th century through the 19th century. Widely recognized for its consistent weight and purity, the Pillar Dollar became one of the first truly global currencies, extensively used in international trade across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. Its design featured two hemispheres between the Pillars of Hercules, symbolizing Spain’s claim to both the Old and New Worlds, with a banner reading Plus Ultra ("More Beyond"). Due to its reliability and widespread acceptance, the coin heavily influenced the development of other currencies, including the United States dollar, and it played a crucial role in shaping global commerce during the age of empire and exploration.

This commemorative coin is a limited issue. It contains 1 Troy oz of 999.9 pure silver and features alluring artistry full of symbolism and historical relevance.

Today, you can acquire the 2025 1 oz 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Pillar Dollar Silver Coin at SD Bullion.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 pure silver;
  • Bullion coin;
  • Produced by the Perth Mint;
  • Commemorative edition;
  • Limited mintage of 30,000 units;
  • Holds an AUD 1 face value and legal tender status backed by the Australian government;
  • The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III;
  • The reverse is a tribute to the original Spanish Pillar Dollar.

The Design

The obverse depicts Dan Thorne’s effigy of His Majesty King Charles III and the engravings that describe the coin’s weight, fineness, and face value.

The reverse features two hemispheres under the Spanish Crown, representing the Old and the New Worlds. The two columns flanking the image refer to the Pillars of Hercules, which are adorned with banners inscribed "PLVS VLTRA," which in Latin translates to “more beyond.”

The whole design is encircled by the words “VTRAQUE VNUM”, meaning “both are one,” symbolizing the unity of continents under the Spanish empire.

The “M” mintmark honors the coin’s historical connection to the Mexico City Mint, the origin point of many reales used during Australia’s early colonial period.

The Pillar Dollar Commemorative Coin

This release honors the old Spanish Pillar Dollar, also called the peso or piece of eight. During the colonial era, this coin was essential for trade in the Americas and other parts of the world.

In 1800, when Australia (specifically New South Wales) was running low on money, Governor Philip Gidley King made a rule that allowed these Spanish coins to be used as official money there.

Later, another governor, Macquarie, took this a step further by creating the iconic "holey dollars" and "dumps" from imported Spanish reales, the first coins ever made in Australia.
