The Lunar Series is one of the Australian Perth Mint’s most popular coin series. It delivers platinum, gold, and silver coins of varied sizes and finishes over a 12-year cycle based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

This is the third cycle of the Lunar Series coins, hence the name Lunar Series III. And 2025 makes its sixth edition. It pays tribute to the Snake, the sixth Astrological Sign from the Chinese Lunar Calendar that rules 2025.

The 2025 1 oz Year of the Snake Silver Coin also marks the premiere of King Charles III’s effigy on the obverse of the series.

The Design

The 2025 reverse features a snake coiled in a bamboo trunk. It also contains a Chinese character and its translation, “SNAKE,” the year of issuance, “2025,” and a discreet “P” mint mark on the left identifying the Perth Mint.

On the obverse, Charles III’s left profile bust, designed by Dan Thorne, is encircled by inscriptions reading “CHARLES III,” “AUSTRALIA” on top, “1 oz 9999 Ag”, and “1 DOLLAR” on the bottom rim, referring to the coin’s weight, fineness, metal content, and face value. 

The Year of the Snake

The Chinese Zodiac cycles through its signs annually, with each year associated with a specific animal. 

The Year of the Snake returns in 2025, having last appeared in 2013, 2001, 1989, and earlier years. Those born under this sign are often seen as mysterious, wise, and compassionate. 

As the sixth sign in the zodiac, the Snake is regarded as the most intuitive. 2025 is expected to bring a year filled with romance and excitement.
