The Design

The obverse pays tribute to American heritage by depicting a Native American Chief’s facing right. This portrait is a revised version of James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel, released for the first time in 1913. 

This design combines traces from distinctive Native American leaders: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” arches in front of the Chief’s forehead, while the year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.

The coin is called “Buffalo” because its reverse design features a giant American Bison resembling a Buffalo on the left side. 

The inscriptions on this side start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arching atop the buffalo, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”, meaning “one, out of may” above the animal’s back. The other motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is on the lower left, near the buffalo’s muzzle. The inscriptions at the bottom read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.” regarding the coin’s face value, weight, fineness, and metal content.

The Mintage

Gold Buffalo coins are produced exclusively by the West Point branch, one of the US Mint’s official facilities.

Each coin weighs 1 oz of .9999 pure gold, has a 32.7 mm diameter (1.287 in), and is 2.95 mm (0.116 in) thick with reeded edges.

The coins are legal tender and hold a $50 face value, backed by the US Federal Government.
