The Design

The obverse portrays King Charles III through an effigy designed by Martin Jennings. The engravings encircling His Majesty’s effigy read “CHARLES III·D·G·REX·F·D·50 PENCE,” which stands for the King’s name, the Latin initials “By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith,” and the coin’s monetary denomination.

The reverse displays Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan in 1987. The feminine guise stands in the fierce wind, wearing a helmet and holding a trident to represent her naval history and the Union Jack Shield. 

The first circle around Britannia has micro engravings that read “Decus et Tutamen.” On the outer rim, the inscription “‘BRITANNIA’ 2025’ 1/4 oz’ 999’ FINE’ SILVER’” describes series, issuance, weight, purity, and metal content.

Anti Counterfeiting 

Four anti counterfeiting measures can be found in the reverse design.

The first anticounterfeiting measure is the micro-text “Decus et Tutamen,” which means “an ornament and a safeguard” surrounding Britannia’s depiction. The image in focus on the lower left changes from a padlock to a trident as you move the coin. The movement also brings life to the waves in the background because of the surface animation. Finally, Britannia’s shield is imprinted with tincture lines alternating patterns.
