The Design

Since 2023, the Gold Britannia series has featured a new obverse, presenting the effigy of King Charles III, facing left. By tradition, the portrait direction changes with each new monarch’s reign, reversing from their predecessor.

The bust of King Charles III was sculpted by Martin Jennings. Around his image are the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” the face value of “25 POUNDS,” the year of issue, and “D.G.REX.F.D,” meaning "By the Grace of God, King" in Latin.

The reverse retains the classic portrayal of Britannia, symbolizing Britain’s strength and heritage. Philip Nathan’s design, first used in 1987, shows Britannia equipped with a helmet, trident, and the Union Jack shield.

The inscriptions on the reverse read “‘BRITANNIA’ 2025’ 1/4 oz’ 999.9’ FINE’ GOLD,” signifying the coin's name, year, weight, purity, and metal content.

Security Features

The reverse side of the coin includes several advanced security features. When you tilt the coin, Britannia’s trident changes to a padlock in the lower left corner, while the waves in the background seem to move. The micro-engraved text "DECUS ET TUTAMEN," which means "An ornament and a safeguard," enhances both the design and the coin's security against counterfeiting.
