1/2 oz Gold Britannia Coin - Random Year
Gold Britannias are among the most classic gold bullion coins in the market. First issued by the British Royal Mint in 1987, they are produced annually in one-ounce and fractional sizes.
The 1/2 oz Gold Britannia maintains the series’ standards. It features 24k gold purity, legal tender status, the traditional Britannia reverse design, and enhanced security features.
Initially, these coins bore Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy on the obverse. However, following her passing, King Charles III’s official portrait has appeared on Gold Britannia coins since the second half of 2023.
Today, SD Bullion offers 1/2 oz Gold Britannia coins of various mint years. However, the obverse design and mintage may vary depending on our inventory availability when shipping.

The Reverse Design
The reverse design showcases Britannia, the nation's iconic female symbol, which has appeared on British sovereign coins since ancient Roman times.
Artist Philip Nathan designed the Britannia Series imagery, portraying her as a warrior commanding the seas. She has a helmet, trident, and Union Jack shield and stands resolute against powerful winds and crashing waves.
The image is encircled by the repeated expression “Decus et Tutamen,” which means “An ornament and a safeguard.” The second circle on the border shows the coin’s year of mintage, weight, metal content, and fineness.
Queen Elizabeth II’s Obverse Design
Queen Elizabeth II’s reign preceded the launch of the Britannia Series, making her effigy the first to appear on Gold Britannia coins.
Over the years, the Queen’s portrait on Britannia Coins has been updated to reflect her official likeness. Raphael Maklouf’s 1985 design depicted her as a young, crowned monarch. In 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s version featured a more mature 70-year-old Queen. The final right-profile bust, created by Jody Clark, was the last official representation of Her Majesty.
Each reverse design includes inscriptions identifying Queen Elizabeth II, a Latin salutation, and the coin’s face value.
The New Obverse Design with King Charles III
King Charles III’s official effigy is a left-profile bust signed by artist Martin Jennings. Encircling the King’s image, read: “50 POUNDS,” “CHARLES III,” and the letters “D. G. REX. F. D.” meaning “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.
