The Design

The obverse portrays Paul Krugerrand, a key personality during the South African fight for independence. The country’s name in English and Afrikaans flanks the leader’s left-profile bust.

The traditional reverse design displays the Springbok Antelope, a native animal that became a national symbol. The inscription “KRUGERRAND” arches over the animal’s depiction, while “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1” referring to metal content, weight, and face value are on the bottom, and the year of issuance completes the image.
