The US Mint celebrates the 230th Anniversary of the historic Flowing Hair dollar, the United States' first dollar coin issued by the federal government on October 15, 1794. 

This modern silver medal showcases precise replicas of the original obverse and reverse designs and is crafted from 1 Troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver. 

In tribute to this milestone, a limited 1,794 medals will feature a unique “230” privy mark, with 230 of these accompanied by a certificate of authenticity personally signed by United States Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson.

The Design

The obverse replicates the US first dollar coin. The design showcases Lady Liberty's right-profile bust surrounded by 15 stars, representing the fifteen states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. It also contains the “LIBERTY” inscription and an updated “2024” date.

The “230” privy mark is on the lower right.

The reverse showcases a laurel wreath surrounding an eagle with spread wings in the center, an early predecessor of the American heraldic eagle, and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

An NGC MS-70 Early Releases Coin 

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, a grading system from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.

According to NGC, “Early Releases” refers to coins purchased from their original mints within the first 30 days of their official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no flaws, which grants it a 70 grade.
