To commemorate a defining moment in American numismatic history, the U.S. Mint issued a silver medal honoring the 230th anniversary of the Flowing Hair Dollar—the first silver dollar officially struck by the federal government.

Originally released on October 15, 1794, under the Coinage Act of 1792, the Flowing Hair Dollar symbolized the young nation’s emergence onto the global economic stage. Designed by Robert Scot, it features a portrait of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, representing freedom and national identity. With only 1,758 examples struck in 1794, the original coin remains one of the most important and elusive pieces in U.S. coinage history.

This modern commemorative silver medal faithfully recreates the historic obverse and reverse designs and is struck from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

The Design

The obverse reproduces Robert Scot’s Flowing Hair Liberty, depicted in right-facing profile and encircled by fifteen stars, symbolizing the states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. The design includes the inscription “LIBERTY” and the updated date “2024.”

The reverse features an eagle with spread wings enclosed by a laurel wreath, an early representation of the American heraldic eagle. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” completes the historic design.
