2024 NGC MS-69 First Day of Issue Mint Obverse Error 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

American Gold Eagles are among the most prized gold coins in the world. They are the official gold bullion coins of the United States and comprise 22k gold coins of varied finishes and sizes, like the 1/10 oz Gold Eagle coin.

The US Mint cares for the highest quality standards when producing Gold Eagles. Mint errors are rare, but they can be quite valuable when they occur.

Struck-through errors are the most common. They occur when foreign material, such as debris or fabric, gets trapped between the dies during the minting process, leaving an unintended imprint on the coin.

These 2024 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles are Obverse Struck-Through samples purchased from the US Mint on day#1 of their official release. They are sealed in NGC slabs as MS-69 coins and are available for purchase at SD Bullion.

  • With anti-counterfeiting reeded edges;

  • Bears legal tender status and a USD 5 denomination;

  • Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty is on the obverse;

  • Norris’s Bald Eagle is on the reverse designs.

The Design

Lady Liberty, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, reproduces the 1907 $20 Double Eagle design. It was especially rescued to be imprinted on Gold Eagles.

In the image, her march forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizes the nation's way to progress, peace, and enlightenment.

Further engravings include the words “LIBERTY,” the Capitol Building, and the coin’s mintage year.

The reverse design created by Jennie Norris corresponds to a commemorative upgrade for the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program.

It showcases the Bald Eagle in a left-profile close-up with a hooked beak and a staring gaze.

The image is accompanied by the coin’s essential information engraved as “5 DOLLARS” and “1/10 OZ FINE GOLD.”

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” complete the image.

An NGC MS-69 First Day of Issue Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company and other third-party services work independently of sovereign mints, appraising coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

According to NGC, “First Day of Issue” defines a coin purchased from its original mint on day #1 of its official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

Mint State coin or “MS” refers to a coin minted as a business coin. The number 69 means the coin has its original luster preserved despite minor or non-detracting contact marks or flaws, which are almost invisible.
