2024 NGC MS-69 Early Releases Mint Obverse Error 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

The comprehensive American Gold Eagle Collection is among the best-sold gold coins in the world. The series comprises Gold Eagles of diverse sizes from 22k gold, including a 1/2 oz gold coin, the heaviest fractional of the series.

The US Mint excels at crafting Gold Eagles, aiming for the highest quality standards. This makes mint errors rare and quite valuable when they occur.

Struck-through errors are the most common type. They occur when foreign material, such as debris or fabric, gets trapped between the dies during minting, leaving an unintended imprint on the coin.

These 2024 1/2 oz American Gold Eagles, in particular, are Obverse Struck-Through samples purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release. They are sealed in NGC slabs as MS-69 coins and are available for purchase at SD Bullion.

Coin Highlights

  • Authentic mint error certified by the NGC;

  • Encapsulated, graded, and sealed as an MS-69 coin;

  • Struck through error displayed on the obverse side;

  • Produced by the US Mint;

  • Purchased within the first 30 days of its official release;

  • Contains 1/2 oz of .9167 fine gold;

  • With anti-counterfeiting reeded edges;

  • Bears legal tender status and a USD 25 denomination;

  • The obverse features Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty;

  • The reverse showcases Norris’s Bald Eagle.

The Design

Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, replicates the 1907 $20 Double Eagle design and was specially chosen for the Gold Eagles.

The depiction of her striding forward with a torch and an olive branch symbolizes the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment. Additional engravings include "LIBERTY," the Capitol Building, and the year of mintage.

The reverse, designed by Jennie Norris, commemorates the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program.

It features a close-up of a Bald Eagle with a hooked beak and intense gaze. The image includes essential coin details such as "25 DOLLARS" and "1/2 OZ FINE GOLD." The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" complete the design.

An NGC MS-69 Early Releases Coin

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and other independent third-party services evaluate coins separately from sovereign mints, utilizing the Sheldon Scale to grade coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

According to NGC, “Early Releases” refers to coins purchased from their original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

Mint State coin or “MS” refers to a coin minted as a business coin. The number 69 means the coin has its original luster preserved despite minor or non-detracting contact marks or flaws, which are almost invisible.
