The Design

The obverse of the Gold Buffalo Coin features James Earl Fraser’s inspired Native American Chief design. It showcases a right-profile bust joining elements from three Native American leaders: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The inscriptions include “LIBERTY” in front of the Native American’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F” for the artist’s initials.

On the reverse, a majestic American Bison, resembling a buffalo, dominates the left side of the coin, giving the coin its nickname. The engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” denoting the coin’s country of origin, motto, denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
