The Year of the Dragon coin depicts a Dragon on the reverse side. The Dragon has a twisted body, sharp paws, and a long tail, surrounded by waves and fog. The inscriptions accompanying the image are the Chinese symbol, “DRAGON 2024,” and “P125,” representing the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait, designed by Jody Clark, features the obverse design. The crowned Queen’s effigy also displays the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “1952-2022,” and “AUSTRALIA” on top, referring to the Queen’s name and reigning period and the coin’s origin. “2 oz 9999 Au” and “200 DOLLARS” are on the bottom rim and describe the coin’s weight, fineness, metal content, and face value.
The Chinese Calendar
The Dragon is the fifth zodiac sign and the only mythical creature. According to Chinese culture, the ascending animal’s trait heads its year. Therefore, 2024 is expected to be magical and bring good fortune and prosperity.
2024 is the Year of Dragon. As the cycle lasts twelve years, previous Years of the Dragon correspond to 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on.
