The Royal Canadian Mint delivers the second silver coin from its Ice Age Series. The Woolly Mammoth is a giant extinct species that became an icon of the prehistoric era.

The series premiered in 2023, showcasing the Smilodon Saber-Toothed Cat. It aims to feature other extinct species typical of that freezing period.

The coins contain 2 Troy oz of 99.99% pure silver and the RCM’s most advanced security features.

In addition, this coin also marks the premiere of King Charles III’s portrait on the Ice Age Series.

The Design

The effigy of King Charles III debuts in the Ice Age Series through Steven Rosati’s design. The inscriptions surrounding the image read: “CHARLES III,” the letters “D.G.REX” standing for “By the grace of God, King” and the “10 DOLLARS” denomination. 

The reverse design showcases a Woolly Mammoth marching off the coin, with its trunks on the air and huge tusks. The inscriptions that encircle the image correspond to the origin, issuance, metal content, and weight through: “CANADA 2024” on top, “FINE SILVER 2 OZ ARGENT PUR” at the bottom, and “9999” on the lower right, near the Mammoth.

The Woolly Mammoth

The Woolly Mammoth, or Mammuthus Primigenius, is an extinct species of mammoth whose well-preserved frozen carcasses in Siberia and North America allowed profound studies regarding the animal’s behavior and appearance. 

The Woolly Mammoths easily adapted to the last ice age because their bodies were covered in fur, with an outer covering of long guard hairs and a shorter undercoat. They were as big as an African elephant and would feed essentially with grasses and sedges.

Security Features

The Royal Canadian Mint is famous for its advanced anti-counterfeiting measures. In these coins, security features include radial lines precisely engraved on the border of the reverse side and the whole surface of the obverse, and a micro laser maple leaf imprinted on the reverse side, with the number 24 centered, indicating the year of issuance.
