The Design

The Dragon in the reverse of the gold coins has a full-body depiction. It has a twisted body, sharp claws, and a long tail, surrounded by waves and fog.

The corresponding Chinese character for the animal is on the right, with “DRAGON 2024,” and on the left, “P125,” represents the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.

Artist Jody Clark signs the obverse portrait of former Queen Elizabeth II. The design also displays the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “1952-2022,” and “AUSTRALIA” on top, describing the Queen’s name and reigning period and the coin’s origin.

“10 oz 9999 Au” and “1000 DOLLARS” are on the bottom rim, informing the coin’s weight, fineness, metal content, and denomination.

The Chinese Calendar

Unlike the Gregorian Calendar, the Chinese Calendar begins in the middle of January, with the rise of the new moon, and it initiates the cycle of twelve Astrological Signs that interchange annually. 

2024 is the Year of Dragon. As the cycle lasts twelve years, previous Years of the Dragon correspond to 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on. According to Chinese culture, the ascending animal’s traits are supposed to bring good fortune and prosperity to those born in the Year of the Dragon.
