The Design

The Dragon featured on the coin has a twisted body, sharp claws, and a long tail, surrounded by waves and fog. The reverse design also features the creature’s Chinese symbol, “DRAGON 2024,” and “P125,” representing the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.

The obverse brings Jody Clark’s crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Besides the Queen’s name, “ELIZABETH II,” on top, Her Majesty’s reigning period is engraved as “1952-2022,” and “AUSTRALIA,” complete the upper inscriptions.

The coin’s weight, fineness, metal content, and face value on the bottom read “1/20 oz 9999 Au” and “5 DOLLARS.” 

The Year of the Dragon
According to Chinese culture, each year is governed by an Astrological Sign that imprints its traits to the year’s fortune. 

2024 is the Year of Dragon. The Dragon is the fifth zodiac sign and the only mythical creature. Therefore, 2024 is expected to be magical and bring good fortune and prosperity.

As the Chinese Astrological Signs cycle lasts twelve years, previous Years of the Dragon correspond to 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on.
