The third strike of Scottsdale Mint’s Commander Series pays tribute to the Spanish Hernan Cortes, stamping his bust on silver and gold coins of the series.

The Commander Series is a recent production of the Scottsdale Mint in partnership with SD Bullion, which aims to present an iconic world leader at each strike.

Hernan Cortes is the third leader depicted in the series, which debuted with Napoleon Bonaparte and was followed by General Patton.

Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano, 1st Marquess of the Valley of Oaxaca, was a Spanish explorer who led the expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. In the early 16th century, Cortés brought much of present-day mainland Mexico under the rule of the King of Castile. Cortés was one of the Spanish explorers and conquistadors who initiated the first phase of Spanish colonization in the Americas.

The Design

Cortes’s effigy is stamped on the obverse design through a left-profile bust wearing a morion, a traditional Spanish helmet engraved with the sun's image. The inscription “CORTES” is at the top, while “2024” is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse side features the Coat of Arms of Liberia, along with engravings that inform the coin’s denomination, purity, metal content, and weight. They read “1,000 DOLLARS” and “9999 FINE GOLD—TENTH TROY OZ.”

As a proof-like coin, its blank background exhibits a brilliant luster, contrasting with the overlapping matte design imprints.
