2023 PCGS MS-70 First Strike 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin

The US Gold Buffalo was the first US Mint’s 24k gold coin with annual strikes. Depicting the traditional Indian Head design on the obverse side and the American Bison on the reverse, this coin is legal tender, with a 50-dollar denomination.

For investors who want to add high-quality gold coins to their investment portfolio, a refined 24-karat Gold Buffalo coin may be a great acquisition. And for collectors who wish to purchase excellent condition coins, these US Gold Buffalos have been submitted to PCGS’s grading. They were encapsulated for protection and given an MS-70 grade, the highest in the scale. Moreover, these coins have been produced in the first 30 days of production.

You can now purchase 2023 PCGS MS-70 First Strike 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins online from SD Bullion.

The Design

The obverse is the celebrated depiction of the 1913 Indian Head by James Earle Fraser. The image shows a Native American Indian Chief’s bust, matching traces from three different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is in front of the Native’s forehead, while the year of mintage and an “F” for the artist’s initials are on the lower left.

A giant American Bison is the reverse design. The animal’s upstanding position resembles a buffalo, hence the moniker. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the buffalo. The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” lies over the animal’s lower back, and “IN GOD WE TRUST” is near its muzzle. On the bottom rim, beneath the buffalo, the inscription read: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD”, which stands for weight, metal content, fineness, and face value.

The Buffalos Series

Introduced in the bullion market in 2006, Gold Buffalo Coins were the first American coins comprising 99.99% pure gold, unlike the other popular US Mint gold coins, the American Gold Eagles.

Gold Buffalos are minted every year in the West Point branch. Each coin weighs 1 Troy oz with a 32 mm diameter (1.287 in) and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges. It is legal tender and holds a denomination of USD 50.

James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head design stamped on the obverse side is considered one of the best motifs of the US Mint. It was initially used as the face of the 20-Dollar Double Eagle coin in 1913 and was rescued in the Gold Buffalo Series. The symbolism implicit in the design attracts collectors who value American history and some numismatic value as well.

A PCGS MS-70 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins and collectibles based on the item’s condition at the moment of appreciation.

First Strike coins are those made in the first 30 days of the series release.

An MS-Mint State coin is a business strike coin with the same format as a popular circulated coin. As 70 is the highest grade on the scale, it is attributed to a perfect coin with no visual flaws or signs of use.
