2023 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz Onc Papa Gold Coin

The Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation introduces an alluring gold coin in tribute to one of the most popular currency notes of all time: the 1899 $5 Silver Certificate Oncpapa Indian Chief. 

Onc Papa was the name of the Chief Running Antelope of the Onc Papa (Hunkpapa) Lakota Sioux. In 1899, his image was featured on a $5 silver certificate, making him the first and only Native American to be the central figure on US paper currency. 

This gold coin, struck in 2023, contains 1 Troy oz of 99.9 gold and a USD 50 face value. It was purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

It also contains the engravings “OGLALA LAKOTA SIOUX NATION,” “INDIAN SOVEREIGN NATION,” “FIFTY DOLLARS,” and the description of the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity “1 TROY OZ .999 FINE GOLD.”
