2023 NGC MS-70 Early Release 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin
While most gold coins available in the bullion market are 22k, American Gold Buffalos are 24-karat gold coins. Minted for the first time in 2006, it was also the first time the US Mint fabricated a 99.99% pure gold coin.
The US Mint was already famous for the American Eagles Series, but a 24k gold coin combined with a popular motif made Gold Buffalos another success for the Mint.
The NGC evaluates and grades coins following the Sheldon Grading Scale, which attributes classification to coins according to their condition and authenticity.
The 2023 MS-70 Early Release Gold Buffalos are coins struck in the first 30 days of production, taken to the NGC’s accreditation to provide investors and collectors the necessary reliability for their purchase.
Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 pure gold;
- Bears legal tender status and the face value of USD 50;
- Graded perfect MS-70, certified by the NGC;
- 18th strike of the Gold Buffalo;
- The obverse features the reproduction of the Indian Head Nickel;
- The reverse displays the American Bison.
The Design
The obverse is a James Earle Fraser creation, initially designed to be the 1913 Indian Head Nickel’s face. The 2006 obverse design is a reviewed version of that coin.
The image showcases a right-profile bust of a Native American Indian Chief, combining traces from three different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The engraved inscriptions are “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, “2023” for the year of mintage, and an “F,” to the artist’s initials, right under the year, on the lower left.
The reverse side displays an American Bison in an upstanding position. The words engraved refer to its origin with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” lies over the animal’s lower back. A second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is near the animal’s muzzle. The information regarding the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and denomination is beneath it: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
An NGC MS-70 Early Release Coin
According to the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, early-release coins are coins made in the first 30 production days. MS stands for Mint State, which means the analyzed coin has the same shape as a popular circulation coin. Grade 70 is the highest grade on the Sheldon Scale, attributed to almost-perfect coins with no visible imperfections.
The Mintage
Despite operating on several facilities, the US Mint only produces 24k Gold Buffalos in the West Point branch.
Each Gold Buffalo contains 1 oz of .9999 pure gold, 32.7 mm diameter (1.287 in), and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges. The US Federal Government fully guarantees Gold Buffalos legal tender status and a face value of $50.
