The Design

Despite Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, it is her bust depicted on the coin’s obverse. It is Her Majesty’s last official portrait, created by Susanna Blunt.

Surrounding the image, the inscriptions read: “ELIZABETH II,” the letters “D.G.REGINA” standing for “By the grace of God, Queen” in English, and the “10 DOLLARS” denomination. An exciting detail beside the Queen’s portrait is her reign dates, 1952 and 2022, separated by stars.

The reverse design showcases the Smilidon Sabre-tooth cat in an attack movement. With a wide open mouth, sharp teeth, and paws, the image elicits the animal’s voracity and danger. The inscriptions encircling the image correspond to the origin, issuance, metal content, and weight: “CANADA 2023” on top, “FINE SILVER 2 OZ ARGENT PUR” on the button, and “9999” beneath the cat. This design is a creation of artist Julius Csotonyi.

The Smilodon Sabre-tooth Cat

The name “smilodon” comes from its meaning, “scalpel,” which perfectly describes the wild cat’s 18 centimeters teeth.

As a competent predator, the Sabre-tooth cat would stalk, hide and pounce over big herbivores, including camels, horses, and giant ground sloths.

Although much associated with the Ice Age, this prehistoric animal was natural in warmer climates. Its fossils are primarily found in North, Central, and South American ice-free areas.

Its last fossil found dates to 2019. Archeologists identified the discovery as a 35,000 to 40,000-year-old bone and the first proof of its presence in southern Alberta before its extinction 11,700 years ago.
