2023 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin
The one-troy-ounce coin is the longest-running size option of the Silver Libertad Series, but over the decades, the Mexican Mint has broadened the collection by adding larger coins, like the 2 oz Silver Libertad.
The double-weighted coin carries the same features as its standard counterpart. The 2 oz Silver Libertad displays Mexican Independence as a motif, the same design on both sides and legal tender status backed by the Bank of Mexico.
However, since it is a heavier coin, it may offer versatility for collectors used to the traditional 1 oz coin and investors who would enjoy diversifying their assets with such an iconic silver coin.

The Design
As the motif is based on the History of Mexican Independence, the coin’s design became a reference to the national freedom conquered in 1821. The obverse features the eleven versions of the Coats of Arms used throughout Mexican history. They all showcase the national Eagle defeating the rattlesnake, representing the foreign presence. The current seal is in a central position, surrounded by “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”
The Angel of Victory, depicted on the reverse, is a feminine personification of the Mexican nation, which became a monument in Mexico City. The engraving “2 ONZAS PLATA PURA 2023 LEY .999” describes the coin’s weight, metal content, year of issuance, and purity. The “M” on the right is the Mexican Mint mintmark.
The Lack of Face Value
Silver Libertad Coins do not hold monetary denominations engraved on them. The Bank of Mexico attests to their legal tender through their fineness and weight based on the silver spot price.
