2023 1/4 oz Britannia Gold Coin - King Charles III Obverse Design
The Britannia Gold Coins have long depicted Queen Elizabeth II on its gold and silver coin’s obverse. However, because of the Queen’s passing in 2022, the Royal Mint had to update the coin’s standard design to welcome the new British Monarch, King Charles III.
Aiming to honor the former Queen’s long reign and the new Monarch, the 2023 edition got a double strike: a Type 1 gold coin carrying Queen Elizabeth II’s last effigy and the Type 2, with the first depiction of the King.
You can now purchase Type 2 2023 1/4 oz Gold Britannia coins online from SD Bullion.

The Design
Britannia first appeared on British coins in 1672, during the reign of Charles II. The image showcased in the Britannia series is a creation by Philip Nathan and has been used since the launch of the program in 1987. She is depicted as a protector and master of the sea, as she carries the Union Jack shield and a trident. The first circle surrounding the image has the Latin inscription “Decus et Tutamen”, meaning “An ornament and a safeguard.” The second circle on the outer rim has the coin’s year of mintage, weight, metal content, and fineness inscribed as “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” ¼ oz,” “999.9 FINE GOLD.”
The new obverse design honors King Charles III. His first depiction is signed by artist Martin Jennings, who portrayed a left profile, differently from the previous effigy of the Queen, which was a right-profile portrait. Encircling the King’s image, the inscriptions read: “25 POUNDS,” “CHARLES III,” and the letters “D. G. REX. F. D.” meaning “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.
Security Features
The Royal Mint adopted new security measures for the reverse side of Britannia Series coins in 2021. Texture motion on the background image gave the background a wave movement. The padlock on the lower left turns into a trident as the angle of view changes. The shield received tincture lines to highlight the flag, and the micro-text “Decus et Tutamen” was engraved on the reverse.
