The Design

Britannia has been a British symbol since Roman times and remains stamped in this coin collection since its release in 1987.

Britannia’s current depiction is a Philip Nathan creation used to face the reverse side. She has a defensive posture in the image, carrying the Union Jack shield and a trident. Along with the picture, the inscriptions describe the coin’s year of mintage, weight, metal content, and purity through the inscriptions “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” ¼ oz,” “999.9,” “FINE GOLD.”

The obverse honors the memorable Queen Elizabeth II through a right-profile bust created by Jody Clark in 2015. Encircling the effigy, the engravings read: “25 POUNDS,” “ELIZABETH II,” and the letters “D. G. REG. F. D.” meaning “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.

Security Features

The British Royal Mint added four new security measures to the Britannia Series in the 2021 edition, which became standard features of these coins. Some wave texture motion on the background image. The padlock that lies aside the trident promotes different perceptions according to the angle of view. The shield received some micro-engravings, which read “Decus et Tutamen” - “an ornament and a safeguard.”
