The Reverse Design

The reverse design features Britannia, the feminine figure of the nation, which has been stamped on British sovereign coins since the ancient Roman era.

Philip Nathan created the image used in the Britannia Series and showcases her as a warrior, master of the ocean with a helmet, a trident, and the Union Jack shield against the fierce wind and waves. 

The image is encircled by the repeated expression “Decus et Tutamen,” meaning “An ornament and a safeguard.” The second circle on the border carries the coin’s year of mintage, weight, metal content, and fineness.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Obverse Design

The reign of Queen Elizabeth II is prior to the series’ release. Therefore, the first Gold Britannia coin was released with Her Majesty’s effigy.

The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on Britannia Coins has followed the Her Majesty’s official updates. The first effigy showcased a young adult crowned Queen, designed by Raphael Maklouf in 1985. It was substituted by the portrait of a 70-year-old Queen designed by Ian-Rank Broadley in 1998. Finally, the last official right-profile bust of Her Majesty was designed by Jody Clark.

All the reverse designs are accompanied by inscriptions identifying Queen Elizabeth II, a formal salutation in Latin initials, and the coin’s face value.

The New Obverse Design with King Charles III

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III rose as the new Monarch, and His official portrait stamps the Gold Britannia coins from the second semester of 2023 on.

King Charles III’s official effigy is a left-profile bust signed by artist Martin Jennings. Encircling the King’s image, read:  “25 POUNDS,” “CHARLES III,” and the letters “D. G. REX. F. D.” meaning “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.
