2023 ¼ oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin
The ¼ oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin is the only fractional size released along with the 1 oz version back in 1989.
Among the most sought-after gold coins in the world, the Gold Philharmonic Collection conquers investors and collectors because of its elegant design allied to its high-quality bullion.
Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins contain 99.99% fine gold and a unique design that honors the Vienna Orchestra.
Besides this ¼ oz gold coin, the Mint annually produces the standard 1 oz, the ½ oz, the 1/10 oz, and the 1/25 oz gold coins.
Coin Highlights
- Contains ¼ oz of .9999 fine gold in BU condition;
- The first fractional size of the series released in the market;
- 35th anniversary of the ¼ oz gold coin;
- Holds face value of 25 Euros and legal tender status guaranteed by Austria;
- The motif is the Vienna Orchestra created by Thomas Pesendorfen, Austrian Mint Chief Engraver.
The Design
The pipe organ depicted on the coin’s obverse refers to the first organ initially built in 1872 but destroyed during the war when the Golden Hall of Vienna suffered bomb attacks. The current instrument became a symbol of resistance and reconstruction in the nation. Along with the image, the inscriptions in German correspond to the country and year of mintage, the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
The coin’s reverse displays violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp, which are crucial classical instruments to the Orchestra. The name of the Orchestra is the only inscription on this side.
The Austrian Mint
The mintage of coins in Austria is much older than the mint’s foundation. Some coins date back to the crusades and the legendary Richard Lionheart, while the first official minting dates back to approximately 1400.
The location of the first official facility also varies, but in the 19th century, it finally settled in Vienna, until nowadays. The Vienna Principal Mint only became the Austrian Mint in 1989, when it became the official subsidiary of the Austrian National Bank.
