The Design

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's “Winged Liberty” design, initially seen on the Mercury Dime. 

It depicts Lady Liberty in a winged Phrygian cap, facing left. The design includes the word “LIBERTY” at the top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the artist's initials, the year of mintage, and the “W” mint mark from the West Point branch.

Weinman also designed the reverse, inspired by the 1907 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal reverse. 

It shows a Bald Eagle perched on a cliff edge, holding a branch. The inscriptions on this side include “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” the coin’s face value “$25,” the weight and purity “1 OZ Pd .9995 FINE,” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

Because it is a reverse-proof coin, it displays frosted background fields while the design elements have a mirror-like luster.
