The Royal Canadian Mint first released the Gold Maple Leaf back in 1979. It quickly became one of the most popular commodities among gold bullion buyers and coin collectors alike. The attention to detail and high-quality security features incorporated into the coin is a testament to the RCM’s leading role in the industry.

Coin Highlights:

  • 43 years of continuous success in the bullion market;
  • Guaranteed to contain 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold content in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) condition;
  • Face value of CAD$50, backed by the Canadian Government;
  • The latest rendition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, as it is typical among the British Commonwealth;
  • The reverse portrays a sugar maple leaf, one of Canada’s national symbols;
  • Security features include a radial line finish on the plain surface of both verses and a privy mark, micro-engraved by laser, containing RCM’s Bullion DNA (Digital Non-destructive Activation) on the reverse;

The highly-detailed designs on both verses of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf have been awe-inspiring for decades. The obverse has featured different renditions of Queen Elizabeth II, throughout different periods of her rule. The current design depicts the fourth generation of Her Majesty’s effigy, as designed by Susanna Blunt, only the second Canadian artist to create a portrait of a British monarch to be used in Canadian coinage. The inscription on the top reads “ELIZABETH II” and on the bottom “50 DOLLARS 2022”.

On the reverse, you can see a sugar maple leaf, sculpted with grains and all. The beloved emblem decorates not only the country’s coinage but also a variety of government and private institutions, along with the country’s national flag, of course. The letters on the outer rim read “CANADA” above the maple leaf and “9999 FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR 9999”, from left to right.

Security Features

The Royal Canadian Mint is a pioneer in the industry when it comes to anti-counterfeiting measures. The background field on both verses of the coin receives a radial lines finish. To top it off, a smaller maple leaf is micro-engraved by laser to the right of the bigger leaf’s stem. This smaller privy mark contains the Royal Canadian Mint’s Bullion DNA (Digital Non-destructive Activation). The RCM’s Bullion DNA is the world’s most advanced authentication system in coinage. Their registration process captures images encrypted with a string of codes. Those images are stored on the RCM’s secure database. They can only be read through their specialized scanner.

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins have been an annual release from The Royal Canadian Mint since 1979. It is the second oldest gold bullion coin on the market, after the Gold Krugerrand. They use 24-karat gold to mint these coins. The RCM is one of the few mints in the world to stamp their products with the .9999 purity level. The Canadian coin is legal tender within its country of emission and bears a face value of 50 Canadian Dollars. It has a mass of 31.11 grams (1 troy ounce), with a diameter of 30.00 mm (1.1811 in).

Along with the 1 troy ounce version, the Royal Canadian Mint also produces this coin in other size variations, which include ½ troy ounce, ¼ troy ounce, 1⁄10 troy ounce, 1⁄20 troy ounce and 1 gram.
